Rehearsals for Victory imagines a fictitious sport called Victory Gymnastics, inspired by the movements of Romanian gymnasts on the winners’ podium at international competitions. The sport’s principles, rules, and foundational movements are presented in an instructional video titled ‘Gymnastics for Victory’. The accompanying book, ‘Routines of Victory’, offers detailed descriptions and illustrations of complex exercises. Additionally, ‘Conversations during Victory Gymnastics‘ features a dialogue between two sports commentators discussing a competition.
In Romania, female gymnasts have played a crucial role in validating the country as a prosperous nation and a sporting power, from Ceausescu’s regime to the present day. Each victory is more than a sporting achievement; it becomes a symbol of national vitality, reflecting the success of the state in producing citizens capable of competing on the international stage.
The highest levels of the podium must be conquered. Losing is not an option. The postures of victorious gymnasts — medals at their chests, gazing at national symbols as the national anthem plays and the flag is raised above all others — have become a ritualized choreography over the decades. The victory of one athlete becomes the victory of many, and everyone feels ownership over that success. In this way, the work explores the intersection of nationalism and sports, reflecting on the collective pride and identity shaped through athletic triumphs.
